This is the best FINA World Masters Championships of all times, 75 Hungarian medals so far
Two more days and the best FINA World Masters Championships of all times are over – emphasized Ed Evelly, FINA Masters Committee Chair at the joint press conference by FINA and Bp2017 World Championship Organising and Managing Nonprofit LLC. Hungarian masters entrants have so far claimed a total of 30 gold, 24 silver and 21 bronze medals in various events. After the swimming finals held at the weekend, the closing ceremony will take place at 7.30 p.m. on 20 August, in the Athletic Centre on Margaret Island.
During the press conference FINA President, Julio C. Maglione Dr. referred back to the closing ceremony of the 17th FINA World Championships, where he told Hungary had staged the best FINA World Championships of all times. Since then several heads of states and athletes have backed up his statement. „I am convinced this fantastic success will further enhance Hungarian swimming and water polo of long traditions. For decades, the newly built Duna Arena, the renewed Hajós Alfréd Swimming Complex and additional facilities will all provide numerous young as well as elderly swimmers, water polo players, divers and synchronised swimmers with the opportunity to gain experiences only sport can give” – told Julio C. Maglione Dr. in his speech, highlighting: „I believe Hungary did an incredible job to establish venues and conduct the World Championships within two years only.”
Mohamed Diop, FINA Bureau Masters Liaison member said his experiences at water polo matches in Hajós Alfréd Swimming Complex exceeded all his expectations. Almost 5000 spectators watched group matches and finals were even more crowded. He pointed out: „Although there are two more days to go, we can anticipate that we have seen the most amazing FINA World Masters Championships here.”

He said, synchronised swimmers had the opportunity to compete in such an amazing environment with excellent circumstances they have never experienced before, also, the incredible atmosphere at water polo matches was certainly one of a kind. Divers and swimmers were all satisfied with the tournament and had a great time in Budapest. In his speech he told: „Beside facilities we shall also point out the warm welcome we received from the residents of Budapest and Hungarians. I would like to extend my gratitude to volunteers and officials for organising and conducting this amazing event.”
„Having listened to these speeches I feel it was worth organising the event” – told Tamás Gyárfás, FINA Executive Committee member briefly.
Éva Szántó, Executive Director at BP2017 LLC. informed, about 1000 athletes have visited Hungary to attend the Masters tournament, today relay events feature a total of 4200 swimmers of 1050 teams in Duna Arena. Hungarian masters athletes have so far clinched altogether 30 gold, 24 silver and 21 bronze medals in the different events. The programme of the last two days features swimming events, the closing ceremony of the 17th FINA World Masters Championships will commence at 7.30 p.m. on 20 August, in the Athletic Centre on Margaret Island.
